Our Humble Beginning

On the 5th of June 1997, FINIC (Fomel Industry & National Industrialization Centre) was launched. ‘Fomel’ is a blend of the first and middle name of Mr Foday Melvin Kamara. Completing his further studies in Automotive Engineering in the Federal Republic of Germany, ideas started mushrooming in the head of the Founder of FINIC – Mr. Foday Melvin Kamara to contribute to the reduction of import dependency through what he referred to as ‘Creative manufacturing’ using home conditions and circumstances. After graduation, he returned home and started the implementation of the ideas.

FINIC started from Sierra Leone and has now spread to Ghana and Nigeria. Sierra Leone like any other country, has a human resource with diversified talents. FINIC – Fomel Industry and National Industrialization Centre – was established in 1997 to contribute to innovations in the transformation of agricultural produce into valuable products through the design and manufacturing of agro processing machines enshrining the conditions and circumstances of Sierra Leone.

Since establishment to date, many successes have been recorded. Among these are the design and manufacture of machines in the value chains of Rice, Palm Oil, Cassava, fruit juice etc. Also notable in the innovative effort of FINIC is the establishment of the Centre for Rural Engagement in Appropriate Technology Everywhere (CREATE).

The concept of CREATE is to put into use the machines made by FINIC in the provision of agro processing services across Africa, starting in Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria. In performing that role, market is not only created for FINIC machines but also as a platform to show case their strength.

The Objectives of Finic

FINIC was established to pursue the following objectives:

• Design and manufacture machines systems for use in agro processing and other applications.
• Research into alternative sources of energy using agricultural waste to provide energy for the kitchens and other useful forms.
• Provide skills training in Industrial Mechanics in a real factory situation.
• Manufacture food products from produce grown locally.
